What AI Did to My Job as an Accountant (It Made It Better)

An accountant freed from data entry to do the advisory work they trained for

When people heard AI was coming for accounting, the assumption was that people like me should be nervous. A few years in as an AI-savvy accountant, I'll tell you the opposite is true. AI didn't take my job. It took the worst three-quarters of it — and handed me back the part I actually trained for.

The job I thought I was signing up for

I became an accountant because I liked the idea of being the person a business owner turns to. Someone who looks at the numbers, sees what's really going on, and helps them make a better call. Strategy. Cashflow. The decisions that decide whether a business makes it or not.

Then I started the job. The reality, for years, was data entry. Coding invoices. Chasing receipts. Reconciling accounts that wouldn't reconcile. Re-keying numbers from one system into another. Getting a BAS out the door. Important work, all of it — but none of it the reason I got into this. The advice, the part I was good at, got whatever time was left over. Usually that was none.

I'd trained to help owners make decisions. I spent my days keeping the books tidy enough to maybe, eventually, get around to it.

What actually changed

Here's the honest version of how it felt when AI first showed up: unsettling. If a machine can code the invoices and reconcile the ledger, what's left for me? That's the fear, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't have it.

But that's not how it played out. The work didn't disappear — it inverted. Instead of doing the data entry, I direct the AI that does it. It does the keying, the reconciling, the classification, the first pass at the forecast. I bring the judgment: is this right, does it make sense, what's the story the numbers are telling, what should this owner actually do. The low-altitude work that used to eat my week now happens in the background, and my week is free for the high-altitude work that used to never happen.

That's the role I do now — a FAN, a Financial Accounting Navigator. I run the platform on a business's behalf and hand back finished, decision-ready work. The owner doesn't learn new software. I drive; they decide. And I get to spend my time on exactly the thing I trained for.

More businesses, higher quality, real work

Three things changed for me, and they're the three I'd want any accountant weighing this up to hear.

  • I help far more businesses. When each client no longer costs days of manual processing, the number of owners I can genuinely help goes up, not down.
  • The quality went up, not down. Every figure is reconciled to source and the AI doesn't get bored at 5pm on a Friday. I'm reviewing and judging clean output instead of hunting for my own keying errors.
  • The work is the work I wanted. Cashflow forecasts. Scenario modelling. Sitting with an owner and walking them through what a new contract or a refinance actually does to their position. Strategic, not clerical.

AI-savvy is the new core skill

I used to think being a great accountant meant being faultless with the detail. It still helps. But the skill that's pulled away from the pack is something else: being genuinely good at directing AI. Knowing what to ask it for, how to check it, where it's strong and where it needs a human to push back. Judgment plus AI fluency. That combination is worth more than either on its own, and it's the thing I'd tell anyone training today to get good at.

The accountant who refuses to touch AI isn't protecting their craft — they're volunteering to keep doing the data entry while everyone else moves up to the advice. The one who learns to direct it well becomes more valuable, not less.

Would I go back?

Not a chance. The job is more engaging than it's ever been, more rewarding, and — this is the part that surprised me — better for clients. I'm not a bookkeeper who occasionally gives advice anymore. I'm a navigator who helps real businesses make real decisions, with the grunt work handled. That's the job I thought I was signing up for. It just took AI to finally hand it to me.
